Remember Them: Champions for Humanity Monument

Remember Them: Champions for Humanity is a world-class, educational monument, which honors 25 inspirational leaders and 14 local heroes (a complete list is available at www.remember-them.org).

“It is amazing that a festival like this is taking place at the same time that we are unveiling Remember Them: Champions for Humanity. I created Remember Them because I believe It is imperative that our younger generations understand how our current freedoms and basic human rights were achieved. Remember Them features ordinary people who did extraordinary things in the most difficult of circumstances. I want young people to not only learn the stories of these great leaders, but also to recognize that they are capable of creating change in their lifetime that can be equally as extraordinary.”

- Mario Chiodo, Sculptor

The largest bronze monument in the West, Remember Them will weigh more than 40,000 pounds, cover more than 1,000 square feet and measure 25 feet tall and 52 feet wide. Three of the monuments four sections are already installed in Henry J. Kaiser Park, located in downtown Oakland. Upon final completion, the monument will be surrounded by a two waist-high walls featuring busts of each humanitarian with Braille descriptions for the visually impaired. In addition to the public sculpture, the we are creating a curriculum based on the work and values demonstrated by Remember Them’s champions for humanity.

Come to the Home Front Festival to preview the one-third scale model of the monument (roughly 7 ft. x 17 ft.). The display will also include models and maquettes from various stages of the monument’s concept design. This will include pieces from the original concept design, busts of individual humanitarians, and small-scale examples of segments from monument in its final stage.
