Support to Help at-risk Youth with Job Training and Job Placement
RICHMOND, Calif., August 19, 2011 – Chevron today announced a contribution of $100,000 to help fund RichmondWORKS 2011 YouthBUILD program. The YouthBUILD Program addresses core interests of the community such as housing, education, employment, crime prevention and leadership development. Chevron presented the check to Councilmember Corky Booze at a RichmondBUILD Green Academy graduation ceremony, attended by Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin, Vice Mayor Tom Butt and Councilmember Jeff Ritterman, as well as Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom and Jael Myrick, Field Representative for Assemblymember Nancy Skinner.
“Chevron is proud to continue to support RichmondWORKS to address concerns around jobs, economic development and crime prevention,” said Mike Coyle, Chevron Richmond Refinery Manager. “RichmondWORKS not only provides job training skills, but also life training skills. They are putting people to work, which ultimately helps to improve Richmond’s economy.”
Over the last 10 years, Chevron has invested over $1 million in RichmondWORKS programs, including RichmondBUILD, YouthWORKS and YouthBUILD.
The YouthBUILD Program helps low-income young adults (ages 17-24) work to attain their GEDs or high school diplomas, learn job skills and serve their communities by building affordable housing. The YouthBUILD Program helps to transform their lives and roles in society.

“I have been working with Chevron since joining the city council and they have really stepped up in providing $100,000 in funding for such an important program,” said Richmond City Councilmember Corky Booze. “Since my election last November, I’ve made local job creation and crime prevention a priority. It is programs like Richmond YouthBUILD that best prepare our young people to enter the workforce with the skills and training necessary to be successful. I’m delighted to know that Chevron is equally focused on addressing these issues. As a businessman, I know the power of employment. It gives you confidence in your abilities, and it teaches you to make the right choices in life. I couldn’t be more proud that this city and its businesses are working together to help Richmond youth achieve their professional goals.”

RichmondWORKS is the City of Richmond’s One Stop Career Center and provides Richmond residents with employment and training services. Job seekers have access to a computer lab, workshops on resume preparation and job searching and career counseling assistance.
