Writing Coaches help Richmond High students succeed

WriterCoach Connection brings teams of trained volunteers into public middle school and high school English classes to bring one-on-one help to students on their classroom writing assignments. It’s 530 coaches serve 12 school sites in El Cerrito, Albany, Oakland, and Berkeley. Richmond High is excited about launching the program this Fall and needs volunteer writing coaches!

BE A WRITING COACH

Coaches strengthen students’ writing skills and help students develop their ideas. With positive encouragement from a caring adult, students become confident and competent writers, and creative and critical thinkers. Students complete and turn in more assignments and teachers report that the writing improves dramatically. Every student in a participating class has a coach because these skills are critical for school, career, and life success!

You don’t have to be a writer or teacher to volunteer. We warmly welcome working and retired volunteers, parents, grandparents, college students, and community members of all cultures and backgrounds.

Your coaching commitment is only 2 hours, 1-3 times per month during the school year and never more than once a week – a commitment well worth the satisfaction of helping our Richmond High students succeed!

Volunteers must complete a WCC training to become a coach. Our in-depth training provides strategies for working effectively with students. Training sessions will begin in August. If you are interested in becoming a coach at RHS please register online for RCH3, 4, or 5 . After registering you will receive details and directions to the training site. Each training consists of two 3-hour sessions.
