On Friday, April 12, Contra Costa College (CCC) and Single Stop USA are hosting, “An Evening with Julian Bond,” accompanied by members of the Freedom Singers in the John & Jean Knox Center for the Performing Arts on campus. Julian Bond, an iconic figure of the Civil Rights movement, was one the students who established the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and later chaired the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Mr. Bond has played an important role in fighting for civil and human rights for over 50 years, and we are honored to host him at Contra Costa College.
Proceeds from this event will benefit Single Stop USA’s program at Contra Costa College. Single Stop USA is a national non-profit organization that supports chapters located across the nation who offer a “one-stop center” that provides low-income students with personal support, including counseling, financial literacy, tax preparation, access to technology, and family case management. Single Stop USA at CCC has served 965 students since launching in January 2012. The funds raised at this event will help continue the quality services needed to eliminate many educational barriers that affect our most vulnerable students.
Please support this effort as an educational opportunity for high school students of the West Contra Costa Unified School District. Many of these students do not know the history of the Civil Rights Movement and are not familiar with the contributions made by Julian Bond. We invite you to sponsor the participation of these students as a benefit to civic consciousness that will influence their lives and be remembered for years to come. They will have the opportunity to meet, hear and learn more about the Civil Rights era. The evening will consist of a private reception with Mr. Bond and a program at which Mr. Bond will speak and the Freedom Singers will perform. Please consider being a sponsor at one of the levels below.
Sponsors who contribute $500 or more will be listed in the program. Make checks payable to: Contra Costa College Single Stop USA. Checks may be sent to the President’s Office at Contra Costa College, 2600 Mission Bell Drive, San Pablo, CA 94806.
Thank you in advance for assisting us in making this event a community experience that will benefit student learning while sustaining a needed program on campus. For additional information, please contact my office at (510) 235-7800, ext. 4206.
Respectfully,
Dr. Denise Noldon, President
Contra Costa College
