The excitement is in the air for the “Kids Can Do It!” 7th Annual Home Front Festival on Saturday, October 12, 2013 from 11am to 4pm at the Craneway Pavilion, located in the historic Ford Point Building.
The 2013 celebration will feature interactive activities for family members of all ages – from kids to grandparents. Piggy backing on Rosie the Riveter‘s quote “We Can Do It,” the Home Front Festival will present “Kids Can Do It,” and focus on engaging youth in their Richmond history.
The event will again sponsor the Historic Duck, an amphibious vehicle from the WWII era, to take families on water tours, with an oral history of the nearby shipyards of Richmond, other historic landmarks and notable spots. Historic WWII buses will shuttle festival-goers from the main festival site to the USS Red Oak Victory Ship. We will host jumpers, choo-choo train, face painting, art projects and other traditional activities.
The Home Front Festival starts with the YMCA’s Rosie the Riveter Family Run/Walk, along the beautiful shoreline. Traditional sponsors give away sports clothing and prizes at the morning event. The Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park Visitors Education Center will be open throughout the festival, and has exhibits that highlight the stories of the many cultural groups that came to this melting pot.
What were the children doing during this time? How did innovations such as 24-hour child care help America get the job done? Families are encouraged to come and learn the answers to questions like this and more. There will be bus tours of the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park and children can visit the Park Ranger booth and become a Junior Ranger.
And of course, we will include adult entertainment, music, food and popular features such as the Kiwanis Classic Car Show and booths from local vendors.
