KAISER PERMANENTE COMMITS TO $200 MILLION IMPACT INVESTMENT FOR HOUSING STABILITY

Good health and wellness are key factors towards quality of life, but what if your housing stability is “shaky” at best, or “almost gone” at worst? Physical and mental health can be low on the list of priorities, especially if you just are just trying to keep a  roof over your head.

On May 18, 2018, Kaiser Permanente, the nation’s largest integrated health system, announced an impact investing commitment of up to $200 million through its Thriving Communities Fund to address housing stability and homelessness, among other community needs.

Prevention of homelessness amongst low & middle income households will be the main focus of these efforts. Anyone living in the Bay Area already knows, affordable housing has become difficult to find or maintain as the cost of living continues to soar. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s latest definition of the “low” income level stands at $117,400 per year for a household of four people in San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo counties. This is more than 10% up from last year!

Bernard J. Tyson, chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente states, “We hope our commitment creates a broader national conversation on homelessness, and encourages other companies to join with us to advance economic, social and environmental conditions for health.”

RICHMOND MUSEUM OF HISTORY RECEIVES GRANT AWARD FROM CALIFORNIA HUMANITIES

California Humanities has recently announced the May 2018 Humanities For All Project Grant awards.  Richmond Museum of History (Museum) has been awarded $17,500 for its project entitled Speak Ohlone Exhibit Interactive Project.

Humanities For All Project Grant is a competitive grant program of California Humanities whichsupports locally-developed projects that respond to the needs, interests and concerns of Californians, provide accessible learning experiences for the public, and promote understanding among our state’s diverse population.

The Museum received a grant to fund the Speak Ohlone Exhibit Interactive project and to continue our important work to renovate the Native American section of the permanent exhibit. By working closely with the modern Ohlone community, the project seeks to raise awareness about the Chochenyo Ohlone dialect as well as the inspiring work of the Ohlone people to revitalize elements their culture hidden due to historical injustices. The project will design and implement an interactive audio program about the language and culture of the Huichin Ohlone, the first inhabitants of the East Bay. The project will result in an interactive audio station that will teach a series of phrases in the Chocenyo dialect and the lesson will be led by a member of the Ohlone community. The Speak Ohlone interactive is just one element of an exciting project to renovate the Native American section of the permanent exhibit for the first time in over thirty years. The exhibit will serve school aged children, families and the general public in the Iron Triangle neighborhood of Richmond, one of the most disadvantaged and underserved areas of the San Francisco Bay Area.

“These projects will bring the complexity and diversity of California to light in new ways that will engage Californians from every part of our state, and will help us all understand each other better,” said Julie Fry, President & CEO of California Humanities. “We congratulate these grantees whose projects will promote understanding and provide insight into a wide range of topics, issues, and experiences.”

California Humanities promotes the humanities – focused on ideas, conversation and learning – as relevant, meaningful ways to understand the human condition and connect us to each other in order to help strengthen California. California Humanities has provided grants and programs across the state since 1975.
