This is a great opportunity for the business community to meet the Governor’s top cabinet leader over all business and consumer affairs. Secretary Caballero is among the top 10 most influential women in the State. This is her first trip to West County since receiving her appointment.

Contra Costa County: Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency Secretary Anna Caballero, will be the Keynote Speaker at the Neighborhood Housing Services 32nd Anniversary East Bay Leadership Awards ceremony to be held Wednesday, October 30, at the Mira Vista Country Club. Secretary Caballero will speak to this year’s theme: Renewing the Dream: Homeownership and Housing After the Crash – to address the challenges and opportunities facing working families seeking safe, decent affordable housing in today’s economy.

Caballero’s mission as Secretary mirrors her 30 year career fighting for working families, children and crime victims; driving to create good paying jobs; and advocating for fair and affordable housing.

“We are extremely excited to host the Secretary and to share with her the unique challenges working families face in the East Bay,” says NHS Executive Director Lynette Gibson McElhaney. “The Secretary holds a key position in the Governor’s cabinet and it is important that we keep the needs and contributions of California’s workers at the forefront of the Administration’s priorities.”

NHS East Bay – West Contra Costa County’s oldest community development corporation – has been on the forefront of homeownership promotion for low-income and working families since 1981. This year, the volunteer-run corporation will embark upon an ambitious campaign to help more families avoid foreclosure, expand homeownership opportunities throughout the East Bay and implement a new initiative – Every Soldier Home – to provide financial counseling and housing to help returning veterans secure safe, affordable housing.

Secretary Caballero’s responsibility as Secretary includes the oversight of departments charged with funding affordable housing, civil rights enforcement, banking and financial transactions, consumer protection, and the licensing of 3 million working professionals. She has served in Governor Brown’s cabinet since 2011 when she was appointed Secretary of the California State and Consumer Services Agency. Her background in non-profit work coupled with her local and state government expertise makes her uniquely qualified to help the Governor achieve his goals and to guide the departments charged with management of all state real estate and departments responsible for $9 Billion in annual purchasing.

Prior to her appointment, Secretary Caballero served as a member of the California State Assembly for four years, served as Mayor of Salinas and council member for fifteen, and was also the executive director of Partners for Peace, a non-profit specializing in violence prevention work. She first put her legal acumen to work representing farm workers as an attorney for California Rural Legal Assistance. Dedicated to representing working families at a price they could afford, Caballero and two colleagues formed the law firm of Caballero, Matcham and McCarthy, opening offices in Salinas and Hollister. The firm received numerous awards of excellence during its 25 year history, and Secretary Caballero personally received the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce’s most distinguished award, the Athena, for Entrepreneurial Excellence and commitment to the community.

A graduate of the University of California San Diego, Secretary Caballero earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. Secretary Caballero is a wife, mother of three adult children and grandmother of four. Her husband, Juan Uranga is the executive director of the Center for Community Advocacy in Salinas.
